too many connections

have been running mod_perl 2 with apache::dbi for few days, so far so good, normally 20 httpd with 30-40 persistant connections, cpu usage is under 1.

 

but noticed sometimes cpu usage goes up to 30, and there are 80 httpd... can't even log into mysql because 'too many connections', have to restart apache and mysql. 

 

what might cause this problem? the traffic wont suddently growe up to a lot, i guess some 'bad' queries caused table locked? how to capture 'bad' queries?
