[ic] 'Couldn't fork' error at checkout

I had a user complain that he was unable to complete his checkout. The 
error.log shows several of these in a row:

...process credit card check (standard) error: Couldn't fork: Cannot 
allocate memory at /usr/local/interchange/lib/Vend/Order.pm line 779.


Other than that, we've had a normal volume of orders. The catalog uses 
realtime (skipjack) and is a modified foundation store running 5.4.2

Any thoughts?
