[ic] No folder node images in product tree

I have no [+] or [-] folder node images for expanding and collapsing nodes
in the product tree display for the standard catalogue after at any time I
have installed Interchange.  I have had the same problem with several
different installs each preceded by completely purging Interchange.  I
have tried with Debian packages whether binary or locally built from
source on an i386 system for the current stable 5.4.2, beta 5.5.1, and
development snapshot 5.5.2 versions.

Product tree node images are present and working fine on the official demo
at http://demo.icdevgroup.org/i/demo4 .

Searching for 'images' and 'tree' at http://www.icdevgroup.org/ returns
some relevant messages from the mailing list archive. Unfortunately, those
messages from circa 2004 where multiple people were asking about this
problem have no replies working towards a resolution of the issue.
