My versions are gd-2.0.33, fontconfig-2.4.1, GD-2.35, Authen- 
Captcha-1.023. I'm not using any catalog directives.

FWIW, my images/captcha directory has the same permissions as yours  
(775). Do you think it could be Mod::Interchange?
