I made the following change to the userdb table:

    ALTER TABLE `userdb` CHANGE `email` `email` VARCHAR( 42 ) CHARACTER SET
latin1 \
    COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci NULL DEFAULT ''

Then I updated CATROOT/dbconf/mysql/userdb.conf with:
    Database  userdb  COLUMN_DEF   "password=varchar(64) NOT NULL default
''"

Still getting the following in error.log:
