You're referring to what is commonly known as a captcha.  You can read 
all about them at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha>.  There are a 
few differnet perl captcha implementations that should be easy to 
integrate into interchange, one that you might want to try is the 
Authen::Captcha module
