Btw, our current approach to supporting languages for which latin1 doesn't suffice is to store multibyte UTF-8 chars in the database and then run it through our "encoding" tag, which simply replaces them with their long equivalents in the form of Ӓ Thus far it seems to work. And I think I'm gonna port the locale system over to that approach today as well.
