[ic] Complex Searches - interchange 5.2 vs 5.3.1

I tried copying over some complex searches from a 5.2 installation (which uses the old layout editor
menus) to a 5.3.1 test store using the flyout menus. For some reason this complex search works in
5.2 but not in 5.3.

Just a little background. Our store is split into two main categories. Arts & Crafts and Cake
Decorating. Both of these main categories have common categories "Airbrush Compressors" since we
sell airbrush compressors for Art & Craft people as well as Airbrush Compressors used in decorating
cakes. Now to make things more complex, some of our Airbrush compressor models can be used for both
Arts & Crafts and Cake Decorating, so we've placed those items into a 3 main category named Common.
In 5.2 this search would be done when people clicked on Airbrush Compressors for Cake decorating. It
basically says "Give me all the items in the Airbrush Compressors category that are in either the
Cake Decorating group or the common group and only show me the ones that aren't toggled inactive.
and while we're at it, sort them by the SKU number". This works in 5.2 fine. When I plug this search
into the search box under the general tab of the menu editor, save it, publish it, I get absolutely
no results at all.

Maybe I'm not doing it correctly. The menu editor produces this line in /include/menus/Products.txt

Am I doing something grossly wrong? I don't get any errors in my catalogs's error file or
