In admin, edit the item editor layout. Under the "edit page" tab you'll see:

	Custom View from field:   <drop down menu>

Just set it to the field say.... prod_group, and you can have a input screen
for widgets, and one for wheels, etc. So, when you edit a item in the
widgets group, you'll see whatever admin customizations you made for
widgets. Expirement and you will see! If you are afraid of breaking your
catalog, just log into the DEMO on the Dev Groups site
http://demo.icdevgroup.org/ and mess around
