[ic] Error messages for checkout.html

I am trying to figure out where the error messages come from and how they 
are displayed on the checkout.html page.  For example, when I enter wrong cc 
number it gives me a message.  But where is that message defined?  Also, if 
I want to add an error message for a particular field-how do I do that?
