Hi Scott,

The bar_link routine, which incidentally can be found in catalog_before.cfg,
just inlcudes "class=barlink" in the hyperlink it generates.

So changing the css definition for barlink should work.  Once you have
changed theme.cfg I suggest you open up an example page and then inspect the
html that has been generated to see why the bold style is being applied to
more than just the link generated by barlink.
