Thanks for looking into this. I wasn't quite sure of the best way to
approach the error handling, so I'm glad to get your feedback

Well, it's got my blessing. Unfortunately, I don't have time to work on any
tests as a result of the error handling, but if you're happy with the
changes then I'll upload it to CPAN.
