I have a select list that would say "how many authors does this book
have" 1 to 10, when they choose "3" it makes 3 first/last/sex groups.

I would name them "authorFirst_1" "authorFirst_2" etc. and I guess the
way you lay it out really depends upon your application flow and how
you want to user to experience the app.
