Re: [cgiapp] Random thoughts from a CGI::Application newbie

Greetings All,

...though the site was running under mod_Perl, I got the feeling he
assumed the site was just running a bunch of Perl CGI scripts. It
occurred to me that this was a perfectly reasonable assumption for a
less technical person to make. After all, it's a site using *Perl*
and *CGI*::Application.

I contrasted this to a framework like Mason for instance. It seems
like 'Mason' is almost reaching buzzword status. I'm seeing more job
postings looking for 'Mason Developers' with hardly a mention of
Perl, and certainly not <gasp> CGI. My point is that from a marketing
perspective, the 'image' of the product is very important. This is
true for potential developers *and* less technically savvy folks (you
know, the people who often make the decisions). :-) What's in a name?
Perhaps a lot.

good point, Andrew. I've always loved the "elegance" of the acronyms CRUD and BREAD, just because they're descriptive, pronounceable, easy to type and easy to remember. but...

Who's buying bread? Who in their right mind would pipe up in a corporate conference room to propose a new CRUDdy application, when the more sexily-named Ruby on Rails, AJAX and Struts are being bandied about.

Could CGI::Application & HTML::Template have been suffering lo these long years from GNS (Geeky Name Syndrome)? Perhaps.

Like Andrew I'd perused the CGI::App docs on CPAN long before I ever actually used it. My excuse was it seemed bit thin. After I started using it, I realized that was it's strength. It's simplicity is it's power. But it took a tyrannical new employer who dictated it's use to get me to actually try it out (an employer whose shall remain nameless, but whose initials stand for Jesse Erlbaum). Would I have given it a spin sooner if it hand been named WebAppFire? Methinks maybe, yes.

As old proverb says, you have only one opportunity to make first
impression. :-) So don't ever call anything CRUD, IMHO. Unless it is
real crud.

Speaking of Marketing (and to cross-pollinate the threads...), Peter's CGI-App TWiki: http://twiki.med.yale.edu/twiki2/bin/view/CGIapp has such a cool CGI::Application logo on it!

I think we should rename CGI::App with something befitting that logo, and deserving of some righteous and long overdue, industry buzz.

Buzzwords have to be short and memorable WebAppFire might be a bit over-the-top but what about AppForge, PerlWorks or something else that evokes images of building things? What's the stuff they build ultralite aircraft out of, Carbon Fiber? Even my *new* boss would buy technology that sounded like it was spun off from SpaceShipOne :-)

Just stuff to think about. Wish I coulda made it to YAPC... maybe next year!
