As a former small-press publisher ( http://mark.stosberg.com/tilt-a-whirl/ ), I recommend going the formal
publishing route. As a small press, we didn't have the marketing
resources (including skills and interest) to get our books into the
hands of many of the people that were interested.

Unless some people here are really interested in book promotion and
marketing, I think we should aim for the options with the best
distribution.

Besides, some big publishers like Oreilly and others will allow making
the book "open source" and available online some reasonable time after
it is published.

I enjoy technical writing myself and have been published on lwn.net,
perl.com, and osdir.com, as well as doing technical editting for Wrox
Press PostgreSQL book. I would be interested to help, or at least write
a chapter about form validation!
