Re: [cgiapp] E-commerce frameworks - DMart, OSCommerce

Hello Jeff,
You might want to spend some time reading through the Gnu General Public License (http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html), it is very well constructed and very developer friendly. Not only are you are free to make any modifications to your copy of the source code that you would like to, but you do not have to pay any special licensing fees for the privilege to do so. You are not required to make your modifications known to anyone. The GPL also enables you to redistribute or sell your new modified code, if you so choose to, provided that your new version must also be distributed under the GPL. I have been working with Interchange for many years now (since the days when it was Minivend 3) and work with it currently here at www.backcountry.com. We have made many, many, many modifications here to the source code for our own needs, and have helped to contribute some patches to the core distribution. IMHO, anyone who thinks that the GLP is an "infection" hasn't read it.

Now on a personal note about Interchange, I think it is very capable, very stable, very robust, and very complicated. It is designed for big-scale ecommerce, not the simple on line store with a few products. It /can/ require a lot of development time for customization, but does come with a great foundation to start from. If you are interested in implementing Interchange and don't have a lot of time or resources for learning/developing/customizing, I would strongly recommend working with an Interchange consultant like End Point (www.endpoint.com). If your number of products are only a few hundred and don't change that much, then Interchange may be too big of beast for such a small store. It is in this smaller market that there is a need for a good solution like the DMart proposal. I hope development on it continues.

This package looks really great, but is "infected" with the GPL. I'm
wondering for a commercial company to use a package and make internal
modifications to the product, but not redistrubute the product at all,
what obligations are attached ?

- Do we have to give credit anywhere to the orriginal authors ?
- Do we have to make the source code available ? [from our changes ?]

These are mostly questions my boss has before he'll let me use this.

Back in August there was a thread[1] about modules available for
implementing e-commerce websites. As I'm now on the brink of needing a
similar solution, I'd like to get some feecback from the folks who
posted to see where their respective projects stand.

If you have shell access to the server you will be running it on and can
arrange for a daemon to run I highly recommend Interchange
(http://www.icdevgroup.org/). Its template language (ITL) can be
confusing at times but Interchange powers quite a few high traffic
sites.
