I have never given credit to the original authors nor have I ever made
source code available on some 9-10 projects in 5 states. And, I've
made internal modifications.

You have to do those things if you're going to redestribute, not if
you use internally. Otherwise, every single usage of Apache, mod_perl,
and gcc would be similarly "infected".

Now, it's polite to pass those changes back to the author, if they
involve improvements. But, there's nothing requiring you to.
