This month we are slated to work on setting up OSCommerce. I would still
prefer a Perl solution, but from my last round of research, nothing
available was comparable.

So I don't have any real feedback on the experience yet. 

I did have a good experience helping a non-profit client get set-up with
GroundSpring: http://www.groundspring.com/

This is a service (not a code base to install), but it seemed to be a
good match for online donations.
