Thanks but this will not help me. I need to have this as part of the form and visible but not editable. I figured it out though. If you set the attribute -readonly => 1, it does the trick.
I had forgotten about that attribute, but a quick question? don't you think it might be confusing to users who can't modify a field even though it looks like every other field? I would think that using a 'disabled' input field would be less confusing and we all know how confused some users can be.
Just a thought...
