Can somebody tell me what all the .NET fuss is about? You may say it's a crazy conspiration theory, but here it goes: (1) Microsoft tried time proven "embrace, extend, choke" trick on java. (2) Sun sued them, MS lost was forced to uphold java Sun's standard.(3) MD realized that "write once, run anywhere" promise of java could ruin their monopoly, making OS irrelevant. (4) MS created competing "C++ -like extension with memory management" - C# and .NET, with promises of everything they ever promised to deliver (this time surely on time and secure) - and add kitchen sink. (5) Recently, Sun decided that Linux is hurting it's bottom line more than MS Win/Office, and started cooperate with MS. Sun got from MS like $2B, cool $2000M for some license deals and settlements. But here are red flags:(1) C# is for sure protected by many patents. MS almost doubled number of filled patents in last couple of years. Like patents for FAT filesystem and doubleclick.(2) MS is financing (via BayStar) SCO to sue Linux.
BayStar backed out and took the money back.
(3) coming Windows Longhorn upgrade will be huge change, files will be objects in object database or something equally scary. And it's not obvious how this technology will get accepted. Especially in new cash-poor, talent-rich countries, like China, India, Brazil, Russia. These countries might generate enough power for Free/open source to take over the world - because they have more time than money, and are not invested in old legacy technologies like USA. :-) (4) MS first time in long history relies not on investing into technology innovations (and granting stock options to developers), but on paying dividends any buying back shares. They kind of behave as monopoly utility company, with no good idea how to use cash reserves.I am forced to use java in my newest project, but my strategy is to wait out the inevitable clash between C# and java (revenge match between MS and IBM), if possible, and am learning eclipse, and python :-)
Everything changes, nothing stays the same.
