While this is perhaps not exactly what you're looking for, you may be
interested in JavaScript remote procedure calls.
Brent Ashley has a free library [1] [2] for which I've written an
accompanying CGI-based server (in Perl of course) [3].
Brent's select-box demo [4] does what you're talking about.
