Heh. I just wrote a module here to do this. I consider it a feature :)
We use it for persistant storage where the columns are subject to rapid
change, and aren't used for searching the data. (For example, with
surveys. The user can change the columns involved all they want, and
we don't have to modify the table at all.) Given our small web shop,
this can save hours of headache.
Not that your module won't be useful, just another viewpoint.
