Re: [cgiapp] Twiki or Kwiki?

I was surprised when Clint switched off his Kwiki CGI app site.
I hope all contributors had time to move the content to new site.
If not, we could ack Clint to revive CGIapp Kwiki for another day or two.

Like Mark, I am also split between Twiki and Kwiki:
* Kwiki is easier to comprehend (and install) and more fun to hack,
and it's formatting is lightly more intuitive
* Twiki OTOH is more mature, had edit locking and bunch of plugins
which some are under development in Kwiki, and some are not yet on
the drawing board.

My secret plan ;-) was to introduce gurus into features of Twiki,
so they will be tempted to implement them in Kwiki.
Still hope this might happen... ;-)

Let me tell you more about CGI::App wiki site, how it is organized, and why.

Twiki server where I am hosting CVGI app forum is my experimental
server, I host there 3 twiki instances.
One of them, twiki2, as in
http://twiki.med.yale.edu/twiki2/bin/view/CGIapp/WebHome
was planned as "FAQ farm" to host FAQ wiki for projects
which do not have wiki for FAQs.

I use twiki for almost 2 years now, and I prefer searching through
wiki pages better than searching email archives: - it's much easier
to link to other relevant info, fix misunderstanding
(remove them from history), clear points without necessary citing
previous contributions like you have to do in email. In other words,
improve with time, unlike email archives where info in time comes dilluted.

First FAQ forum I planned there was forum for Midnight Commander -
but I did not started MC forum yet. :-(

Other candidates could be HTML:Template - does this forum has FAQ wiki?
I assume some list members are also on HTML::Template list and might
want to have both forums close by.

Twiki differs from other wikis in one important detail: it separates
namespaces for pages into independent "forums", which are called
for historic reasons "web" (and yes, many users complained about using
term "web" for something better called "folder" or "forum").

I created yet another forum, "Farm", for discussion about organizational
issues. Probably mane is stupid - it was late night when I created it ;-)

You can see all forums at the SiteMap page
http://twiki.med.yale.edu/twiki2/bin/view/TWiki/SiteMap

You can edit pretty much any page, because I did not set up user groups,
but eventually (if needed) I can set up users to be able to edit only
pages in certain forums (webs). If you want to play and chech edit features,
please go to Sandbox forum:
http://twiki.med.yale.edu/twiki2/bin/view/Sandbox/WebHome

I was trying to trim Twiki docs to bare basics, that's why many pages
in TWiki forum (where docs are) are missing - but those pages missing
are docs for administrator, not for regular user.

Please if you have any issues, questions, aks me here on list,
or in off-list private email - I'll be glad to help you.

Another cool feature what Twiki has is email notification.
I set it to send one email nightly with links to all pages changed
during previous day. Intendent usage is to have "peer review"
of any contributions: If you are interested in the page topic
(which is usually easy to guess from page name), you can click on the link,
see what was added, check if it is correct and eventually clear
misunderstanding or expand on discussion, creating new pages as needed.
Clicking on "History" link gives you diffs - Twiki uses RCS and
you can display also previous versions (and attachments, too).

When editing just some minor typo on page, you can save with
"Minor edit - do not notify" checkbox, and this edit will not be included
(but it might, if somebody else made "major edit" of the same page.

I want to subscribe cgiapp list to this "notify" feature for couple
of days (it will generate 1 page nightly only max), just to all of you
to get feeling how it works. If you dislike it, I'll remove it,
but let's try it for couple of days for the fun of it.

It will be little different experience - I hope it will be fun.

Thank you!
