What I did was to add the following to the configuration file for the syslog monitor: smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, Found and is SMART capable.*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, is SMART capable.*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, opened.*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, Failed.*) red 60 &red $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, initial temperature is 5\d+ Celsius.*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, Temperature changed \-?[1-3] (Celsius|degrees) to 5\d .*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, starting scheduled.*) green 60 &green $1 disk smartd.*:\s*(Device: .*, .*) yellow 60 &yellow $1 disk In my case, Debian woody, in the section for /var/log/daemons. It may depend on how syslog is configured on your system. What I'm doing is defining informational messages as "green", failure messages as "red" and there's a "catchall" at the end, which I'm treating as a warning (yellow). All of these go to the "disk" column of the display. You may want to tune the temperature patterns. These catch what I have determined to be the normal operating range for my disks. I've "integrated" lots of stuff into BigSister by going via syslog.
