ok, so I got the host back up and now I notice that the problem is the same. I guess I just 
never realized it before. so every "http" icon that I click on reports the same thing.
so there must be something wrong with my setup file..

localhost       load memory network cpuload
localhost(tf1)  url=http://216.xxx.xxx.xxx:8888 realhttp
localhost(tf2)  url=http://216.xxx.xxx.xxx:8888 realhttp
localhost(beast)  url=http://monsterjam2.org/index2.html realhttp
localhost(gir)  url=http://somehost.stmichaelcary.org realhttp
localhost(pittsboro)  url=http://someothersite.org realhttp
localhost(mythtv)  url=http://myth realhttp
localhost       disk
localhost       syslog
localhost       proc=svscan procs    proc=sshd procs    proc=mysqld procs
localhost       users


they all report the status of the http://216.xxx.xxx.xxx:8888 host.
but all the other parts (disk,memory,etc.) report correct values.
