Go to an external server and try
  telnet <external IP> 1984
You should get a message like

Trying <external IP>...
Connected to <external IP or hostname>.
Escape character is '^]'.

If this doesn't work (e.g. output stops after "Trying ...") then it's a
firewall issue.
