[Bigsister-general] Negative lookahead assertions in etc/syslog

I've got a line something like this in etc/syslog

(?!.*foo.*)(^.*bar.*)    yellow  15       Warning: $1

Now I don't know a lot about Perl regex, but I think
this should match lines containing "bar" if and only if
they do not contain "foo".  It seem to work in Perl
source code, but not in syslog.  Lines with "bar"
with or without foo seem to have no effect.

Any ideas?
