I *knew* there was something with -D, but I had forgotten there's a uxmon 
binary. Thanks! uxmon (run from root) starts just fine. The user I run it 
under needs to have a login shell, but doesn't have one on this platform. 
I remember I had this problem quite a while back already and forgot it.
