Kai,
That worked. Thanks a lot. I'm still struggling with PAGER, neverthe less in the process I understood the following:
This is my current /etc/bigsister/bb_event_generator.cfg
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
*.* prio=40 down=yellow up=green delay=2 \
check="$host.conn and ((not '$router') or $router.conn)" \
norepeat=5 keep=1
suppressed repeatprio=10
*.conn prio=80 down=yellow up=green check="1" delay=0
# pager=/usr/share/bigsister/bin/page
*.cpu prio=20 check="1" delay=0
*.disk prio=60 check="1" delay=0
*.msgs check="1" delay=0
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Like that it works, I receive mail w
hen a
node goes down or up,
but I do not receive mail if I:
1) eliminate the <check="1"> from <*.conn>, or
2) enable the <pager> line (with \ on previous line)
I thought I could use <any script> for the <pager script>.
Indeed my script connects to an Asterisk box to issue a phone call.
But it doesn't seem to work that way. It doesn't execute it as
a script at all. Is there a way to just execute a shell script?
I have few questions:
1) Is there a logfile, different from <messages> where syntax
errors are recorded?
2) For some reason the general <check> in <*.*> does not work
with my nodes. Do I have to define each node something
specific and where for the rule to work?
3) Is there a logfile where it would tell
me that
it attempted
to run my pager script and it did not work for such reason?
Thanks,
Costantino.

Well, did you check that udp pings get thru or get accepted? You may want to
try something like
proto=external pingcmd="ping -c 1 -w 10" ping
if not running asroot.
