That has really been funny - it does not take too many copies of sendmail to use up 1.5GB of virtual memory and as soon as it is used up the machine (Debian Sarge, Kernel 2.6.9, overcommit_memory set to 0) totally locks. Oh :-) I learn from this that it is not a good idea to try to send a few hundred mail messages in a few seconds ...
