AW: [Bigsister-general] Alarms/paging/newbie

Hi wayne,

First of all a good information source is this mailing list and the archived
posts as well as the doc-directory of you bs installation.
About your questions on bb_event_generator I'm not really sure what you want
to know - you can map to any item you define in uxmon-net. For example you
have a line similar to:

Host1	item=MySimpleCheck ping

You can have aline in bb_event_generator like:

*.MySimpleCheck	mail=nobody

As far as I know the documentation and the source code there is no way of
sending a status change twice when it gets worse (you should find that in
the pdf-doc). Regarding the syslog file see documentation section "file
etc/syslog, etc/eventlog, etc/logfile, etc/OV etc" within "docs/config".

Regards,
Stefan

OK, I'm very new to BigSister. Just got it to the point of getting it to
email alarm properly on loss of connectivity, or other red conditions.

Peter Varlien asked a question a week ago and I didn't see an answer to it.
I will need the same functionality so I ask again.

Is there a way to notify on a staus change, then notify on a second worse
status change?

I've printed the BigSister book from Joerg's site, and read most of it.

First, is there another documentation source I should be using instead
of/in-conjunction-with the BigSister-Manual2108.pdf?

Here are some more questions I have:

I can set msgs in bb_event_generator.cfg, but there is no matching Health
Check command. It probably maps to syslog and eventlog and maybe to snmp,
but where do I find that info?

syslog mentions "See below for a description of the format". There is no
description.

Does "hostname proto=udp ping" work? I have no firewall in place at either
end, but can't get it to work at all. I found a reference to external and
got icp ping via external ping program working, but can't ascertain why
"hostname proto=udp ping" doesn't work.
