If you search the bigsister-devel list archives, you will find a "proper"
test implementation of a sendmail queue monitor, including generation of
performance data for graphing.

Mind you, it doesn't work correctly with the latest versions of sendmail, at
least not if you have configured a separate submission process.

I have an experimental fix for that, but it may be Debian GNU/Linux
specific.

The method you are attempting should also work. I'm doing something similar,
to check for messages my email virus scanner has blocked. My definition
looks like this:

localhost       exec="echo -e '&html\n<hr><pre>';ls -1
/var/spool/avmilter/rejected;echo '</pre>'" \
                results="[dv]f\-.*:yellow:&yellow Rejected messages
found;*:green:&green No rejected messages" \
                item=mail       command
The echo stuff is because the entire output of the ls is included in the
"long comment", and I wanted a horizontal line as a separator from the other
stuff I have going to the "mail" column.
