Re: [Bigsister-general] Two questions.

For the second question only:

In Windows 2000 you use SMTP to send alerts. There is a perl program that do that called 'smtpmail' in the bin directory. To use smtpmail you must to indicate in the config file bb_event_generator.cfg the smtp mail server with the clause 'mailhost'.

For example the next line  in bb_event_generator.cfg send an alert to me when  one of the hosts can not connect to the internet using the SMTP mail server located in the same server (127.0.0.1):

----------------
#Test connections to the internet
GOOOOOGLE.* suppressed mailhost=127.0.0.1
----------------

Previous info you can find it on the doc (this is an advice for new people on bigsis). What you can not find there is my experience with sending alert messages to everywhere in the world (for example partners which email is managed by servers externals to your company):
- if you send a message using a local SMTP server to any local email account probably you wil not have problems, but if you try to send messages to another server it is probably that the messages will be rejected because the default perl program 'smtpmail' send the alerts with a generic account 'bigsis' that doesn't exists. In that cases you must change the sender's address in the perl program (it is indicated the place with a comment) to a valid address (like 'suppressed'). And don´t forget to escape especial chars like '@', '-' and so on ;-).
- in some other cases, not only the sender's address must exists, it must we sent from the server that owns the domain name (for example, if you send messages with the sender's address 'suppressed', some servers only accept the message if it's sent from the IP that resolves 'mycompany.com'.
- all before is caused by the new antispam festures of the SMTP mail servers, to make tests you can use an account on Yahoo, it's external to you and accepts all.

Hoping this will be useful for all...

I have two questions.

1. What is the purpose of the "blue" status? I can generate all others
including getting into Maintenance (white), but cannot get a blue status. I
assumed that this was a status that could be set from the system being
monitorred to indicate that it was being taken offline for some reason.

2. I am using Windows 2000 as my Big Sister Server and Monitor. What mail
system is used to send alerts, SMTP in perl?

thanks for any help you can give.
